New Zealand's best 2026 leave play: one day off for five

Updated 7 July 2026

Book one day of leave for 2026-01-02, and New Zealand hands you five days off in a row, from 2025-12-31 to 2026-01-04. That’s a ratio of five days off for every one you spend from your allowance, the best trade the calendar offers all year.

The year’s best bridge

The mechanics are simple once you lay the week out.

  • 2025-12-31 (Wednesday): public holiday
  • 2026-01-01 (Thursday): public holiday
  • 2026-01-02 (Friday): the single leave day
  • 2026-01-03 (Saturday): weekend
  • 2026-01-04 (Sunday): weekend

Two holidays already anchor the start of the block. The weekend closes it out. The only day standing between them and a five-day stretch is that one Friday, and claiming it turns two separate holidays into one unbroken run.

The bigger block

If a single long weekend isn’t enough, the same stretch of the calendar extends into a full ten-day break for four days of leave: 2025-12-26 to 2026-01-04.

Spending four leave days across the working days in that window stretches into ten consecutive days off. Two public holidays at the turn of the year and the weekends on either side do the rest of the work, so four days from your allowance cover a ten-day run spanning the old year and the new.

A useful shortcut for New Zealand’s calendar generally: when a holiday lands on a Tuesday, one day of leave on the Monday buys four days off in a row. It’s the same logic driving both plays here, just applied to a stretch with two holidays back to back instead of one.

The small print

These dates come from nationwide public holidays only, per the Nager.Date dataset as of this review. New Zealand’s regional anniversary holidays and any employer-specific closures sit on top of this and can only improve the maths, never worsen it. If your region observes an extra day near this window, check your own leave calendar. And leave entitlements themselves depend on your contract and length of service, that’s between you and your employer. This page just shows where the public holidays make your leave stretch furthest.
