Italy's best 2026 leave day: New Year's Day

Updated 7 July 2026

Book Friday 2 January 2026 off work and you turn a single leave day into four days off. New Year’s Day falls on a Thursday in 2026, so one day of leave on the Friday bridges straight into the weekend, giving you Thursday 1 January through Sunday 4 January clear. No other single day in Italy’s 2026 calendar returns four days off for one day of leave.

The year’s best bridge

Here is the play, day by day.

  • Thursday 1 January 2026 — New Year’s Day, a nationwide public holiday.
  • Friday 2 January 2026 — your one leave day.
  • Saturday 3 January 2026 — weekend.
  • Sunday 4 January 2026 — weekend.

One leave day, four days off: a ratio of 4. That ratio is what makes this the standout play of the year. Most bridges cost you two or three leave days for the same four days off; this one costs one.

The bigger block

If you want more than a long weekend, extend the same run backwards into a nine-day block. Take four leave days — Monday 29 December, Tuesday 30 December, and Wednesday 31 December 2025, plus the Friday 2 January 2026 above — and you connect the previous weekend, both holiday periods, and the following weekend into one unbroken stretch.

That gives nine consecutive days off, from Saturday 27 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026, for four days of leave. It’s the natural year-end move: New Year’s Day sits inside a run that already has two weekends either side of it, so a modest four-day spend buys a genuine week and a half away.

The small print

These dates come from Italy’s nationwide public holidays only, as listed in the Nager.Date public holiday dataset at the time of review. Regional holidays (patron saint days, for instance) and employer-specific closures vary by city and company — where they exist, they only make these plays cheaper, never more expensive. This page doesn’t know your leave entitlement or your employer’s rules; it only shows where the calendar days go furthest once you decide how many to spend.

The underlying logic is simple: a public holiday that lands on a Tuesday or a Thursday is what creates a four-for-one bridge, because it sits one day from a weekend. New Year’s Day 2026 falls on a Thursday, which is exactly why this is the year’s best single-day play.

Run your own budget

Feed the optimiser however many leave days you actually have and it will find the combination of Italy’s 2026 holidays that returns the most days off for that budget.
