Germany 2026: the one leave day that buys five days off

Updated 7 July 2026

Book Thursday 2 April 2026 off in Germany and you get five days off in a row for the price of one. That single leave day bridges a public holiday, and the weekend either side does the rest of the work.

The year’s best bridge

Good Friday falls on 2026-04-03, a nationwide public holiday. Take Thursday 2026-04-02 as your one leave day, and here’s the run of dates it produces:

  • Thursday 2026-04-02 — leave day (the only one you spend)
  • Friday 2026-04-03 — public holiday (Good Friday)
  • Saturday 2026-04-04 — weekend
  • Sunday 2026-04-05 — weekend
  • Monday 2026-04-06 — this is the day that makes the ratio work: a holiday landing early in the week means the weekend before it is already free, so one well-placed leave day closes the gap

That’s five days off, 2026-04-02 to 2026-04-06, for one day of leave: a 5:1 ratio, the best trade Germany’s 2026 calendar offers.

The bigger block

If you want more than a long weekend, the same stretch of the calendar extends into a ten-day break for four leave days. Take leave from 2026-03-28 to 2026-04-06 and the block runs:

  • 2026-03-28 to 2026-04-06 — ten consecutive days off
  • Four of those days are leave; the rest are the surrounding weekends plus the Easter holiday period

Same bridge, bigger ambition: instead of stopping at the long weekend, you carry through the following week and land on ten days off from four days of leave.

The small print

These dates come from nationwide public holidays only, as tracked in the Nager.Date dataset at the time of review. Germany’s states add their own regional holidays on top — Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, for instance, tend to have more of them than others — so if you work in a state with an extra holiday nearby, your ratio can only improve, never worsen. The same goes for any employer-specific closures over this period. What this page shows is where the nationwide calendar already puts days within reach; how much leave you actually have to spend is between you and your contract.
