France's best leave-day play for 2026

Updated 7 July 2026

Take one day of leave in France on Friday 2 January 2026 and you get four days off in a row: 1 to 4 January. The 1st is a public holiday and falls on a Thursday, so a single Friday bridge closes the gap to the weekend — the best ratio available anywhere on France’s 2026 calendar.

The year’s best bridge

New Year’s Day, Thursday 1 January 2026, is a nationwide public holiday. Friday 2 January is a working day, but book it off and the block runs clean: Thursday (holiday), Friday (leave), Saturday, Sunday. That’s one leave day converted into four consecutive days off, a 4x return — the best ratio on the 2026 calendar. It works because the holiday lands with exactly one working day between it and the weekend, which is the shape that produces the biggest multiplier: a holiday on a Tuesday or, as here, a holiday followed by one bridging weekday, means a single leave day buys four days off.

The bigger block

For a longer break, May is where the leave goes furthest. Four leave days, taken across the run from 1 to 10 May 2026, turn into ten consecutive days off. May carries more than one public holiday in most years, and 2026 is no exception on the nationwide calendar — the spacing between them is what lets four days of leave stretch into a ten-day block rather than two separate long weekends. If your year has one holiday season worth spending leave on, this is it.

The small print

Both plays use only nationwide public holidays, taken from the Nager.Date dataset as of this review. They hold regardless of which region or employer you work for. If your region observes additional local holidays, or your employer closes between Christmas and New Year, those only add to what’s here — they can’t take days away from either play. This page shows where leave days go furthest; how many leave days you actually have is between you and your contract.
