The year’s best bridge

The mechanics, day by day:

• Thursday 1 January — New Year’s Day, a public holiday. Already off, no leave needed.
• Friday 2 January — a normal working day. This is the one day of leave you spend.
• Saturday 3 January — weekend. Already off.
• Sunday 4 January — weekend. Already off.

Spend one leave day, get four days off in a row. A holiday landing on a Tuesday would work the same way in reverse — you’d take the Monday and bridge back into the weekend before it.
