Australia's best 2026 leave play: one day off buys five

Updated 7 July 2026

Book one day of leave in Australia on 2026-04-02 and the calendar hands back five straight days off, running 2026-04-02 to 2026-04-06. That single Thursday sits between the weekend and the Good Friday public holiday, so one leave day bridges straight into the long weekend. Nowhere else on the 2026 nationwide calendar returns that ratio.

The year’s best bridge

The mechanic is simple once you see the week laid out.

  • 2026-03-28 and 2026-03-29: weekend
  • 2026-03-30 to 2026-04-01: ordinary working days
  • 2026-04-02: the one leave day
  • 2026-04-03: Good Friday, a public holiday
  • 2026-04-04 and 2026-04-05: weekend
  • 2026-04-06: Easter Monday, a public holiday

Spend the leave day on the Thursday and the public holiday on Friday links straight into the weekend, which links straight into Easter Monday. One day requested, five days off taken, a ratio of five to one. A holiday that falls on a Tuesday works the same way in reverse: book the Monday and one leave day buys four days off, because the weekend before it is already free.

The bigger block

Reaching further back turns the same Easter period into a ten-day break. Four leave days, taken across 2026-03-28 to 2026-04-06, produce ten consecutive days off once the surrounding weekends and both public holidays are folded in. It costs more leave than the single-day bridge, but it converts a normal working week either side of Easter into one uninterrupted fortnight-minus-four.

Which of the two plays makes sense depends on how much leave there is to spend, not on the calendar. The bridge is the efficient one; the block is the long one.

The small print

These dates rest on Australia’s nationwide public holidays only, drawn from the Nager.Date dataset as of this review. State and territory holidays, and whatever an individual employer closes for over Easter, sit on top of this and can only extend these numbers, never shrink them. How much leave is available to spend is a matter between an employee and their employer; this page only shows where the days available go furthest on the calendar as it stands nationwide.
