Public holidays in Portugal 2026
Every nationwide public holiday in Portugal in 2026 — 13 dates, each with its weekday.
Last reviewed 7 July 2026
Portugal has 13 nationwide public holidays in 2026. That figure covers the whole country only: regional holidays, tied to individual municipalities, come on top, so many residents get extra days off beyond the 13 listed here.
The shape of the year
The calendar opens with New Year’s Day on Thursday 1 January and closes with Christmas Day on Friday 25 December, so 2026 is bookended by holidays at both ends. The gaps between them are uneven. The longest stretch without a single public holiday runs 92 days, from New Year’s Day to Good Friday — a long clear run through January, February and most of March with nothing on the calendar to break up the working weeks.
Weekday luck in 2026
Where a holiday lands in the week decides whether it stretches into a long weekend or barely registers. In 2026, only one holiday falls on a Monday, while three land on Fridays — both are the shapes that typically extend a weekend. Four holidays fall on a weekend instead: Easter Sunday, Freedom Day on Saturday, Assumption Day on Saturday, and All Saints’ Day on Sunday. A holiday that lands on a weekend is often simply a lost day off, unless local rules move it to a weekday in lieu — and whether that happens varies by country and by year, so it’s worth checking rather than assuming.
Figures are drawn from the Nager.Date open holiday dataset, current as of this page’s review. Governments can and do adjust holiday dates after publication, so treat this as a reliable starting point rather than a permanent record.
